“A
countertenor is a male singing voice whose vocal range is equivalent to that of
a contralto, mezzo soprano or soprano, usually through use of falsetto or far
more rarely than normal, modal voice.” It first came into use in England in the
mid 17th century. With the increased popularity of Baroque opera, the
countertenor voice became popular again in the second half of the 20th century
with the need of male singers to replace the castrati roles in such works.
Although it has been considered an early music phenomenon, there is now a
growing modern repertoire for the countertenor voice.
The
“Canciones” program will be made up of the following: JUBILATE DOMINO
(Buxtehude); IL MIO COR GIA PIU NON SA from “Il Giustino, COMPATISCO IL TUO
FIERO TORMENTO from “Ottone in Villa”, and SE PARTO, SE RESTO from “Catone in
Utica” (Vivaldi); CINCO CANCIONES NEGRAS (Montsalvatge); AT THE RIVER (Arr:
Copland); SAMPAGUITA (Dolores Paterno); BAJO LOS COCOTEROS (Francisco Buencamino);
